Hydro Thunder is a wild motorboat racing game that was released first for the arcade machine and a year later as a launch title for the Sega Dreamcast console. There are four boat categories to choose from, a total of 13 different models. Categories differ in the balance between speed and handling. The tracks of the game also include several less standard environments such as races beyond the Arctic Circle, post-apocalyptic New York or the Nile River. They are also divided into categories, and by winning them you unlock both additional tracks and bonus boats. There is also an emphasis on collecting circles for boosts and finding shortcuts in levels.
