A year has ed since the events that took place in Streets of Rage. On the first anniversary of the defeat of the mysterious "Mr. X "and his syndicate, the heroes from the first part Adam Hunter, Axel Stone and Blaze Fielding met for a small celebration in a nightclub. However, the next morning, Axel received a phone call from Eddie "Skate" Hunter, Adam's younger brother. When Skate came home from school, he found the house in ruins and discovered that his older brother Adam had disappeared. Meanwhile, criminals began to reappear in the streets and fighting and looting began anew.

The heroes realized that Mr. X and his syndicate returned to the scene to avenge their previous defeat. Axel Stone and Blaze Fielding are ed by Adam's brother Skate with his friend, professional wrestler Max Thunder. Their goal will be to once again clean the whole city of crime and at the same time free Adam from the captivity of the mysterious Mr. X and his gang. Your task is to keep moving forward and defeat everyone who stands in your way.

Streets of Rage 2 differs from the previous title in several ways. There are changes in both graphics (characters now are bigger, more detailed and with more animation frames, and scenarios are less grainy) and gameplay (the rocket move was replaced by a special move that doubles in offense and defense along several new moves), along other new features such as life bars (and names) for all enemies and the radically different new characters.

Like the first part, Streets of Rage 2 is a classic 2D arcade beater that was originally released on the Sega Mega Drive game console back in 1991. It was later ported to other platforms, but often contained minor changes compared to the original version. The Windows version of the game was released in 2011 as part of the SEGA Genesis Classics Pack and retains the gameplay of the original.
